My name is Jonas Mashinini, from Witbank. I used to be an Artisan working long hours Sunday to Sunday with no time for myself. I opened my first Nutrition Club in May 2009 and went full time in the business by July 2009. I encourage my team to qualify and attend every event and meeting and to always use the products.

When Tankiso and Kuena Tshehla joined the Work from Home Business in 1996 Tankiso was just finishing his Ph D in Chemistry at Natal University in Durban, and Kuena was pursuing her Masters Degree in Science Education. At the time Tankiso was a Lecturer at the National University of Lesotho and didn’t initially look at the opportunity as a full time business.  However after them both using the products and having wonderful product results, including Tankiso losing 19 kilos, they were excited and qualified to supervisor level. We still cannot believe how a little flyer has changed the course of our lives.

We had been farming in Molteno for 20 years, and although we loved farming and the way of life, it was tough trying to make a decent living.

In order to make a bigger profit margin, we opened a dairy in town and processed all the milk we produced into cheese, yogurt and packaged fruit juices, supplying the Pick ‘n Pay’s in the Queenstown and East London areas. This worked well until we entered a partnership, which turned horribly sour. The problem was compounded even more by a prolonged 5 year drought, which cost us dearly, landing us in a debt spiral that we could not seem to get out of. We had to do something, so we started looking for something that could give us some extra cash – fast!!

This all changed when we received a flyer in Queenstown and were introduced to this amazing opportunity. By sharing our results on the products and the business opportunity with friends and family, we were able to generate a profit in excess of R15 000 in our first 6 weeks of business.

In April 1997 (4 months after starting the business), Mary and I decided we were wasting our time, destroying our health and losing our family by continuing with what we were doing. So, we closed the doors of the dairy, sold the farm, paid what we could of the debts, and threw ourselves full time into the business opportunity.

We pride ourselves in that, in spite of the fact that we were in debt to the tune of R750 000 at the time of closing our business, we were able to meet our monthly commitments from our new business.

Since then, I have been overseas 18 times with the company. Mary and I have been on two wonderful cruises in the Caribbean in 1998 as well as in 2005 and have just returned from the most wonderful holiday at Porto Caras in Greece, fully paid for by the company. We have since moved to Port Elizabeth, into a lovely home, enjoying the kind of lifestyles and incomes most corporate executives only dream of, while working from home, around the family, enjoying an above average income.

The golden rule for avoiding work from home job scams is common sense – if an opportunity sounds too good to be true, chances are very strong it is.

With unemployment stuck at over 9% and many potential employees hunting for a new position for over 40 weeks, offers to get paid for home based tasks may sound appealing.

But BEWARE. There are many scammers preying on desperate job seekers to make a quick buck. In April, a California based man was sentenced to six years in prison for falsely promising bartending and mystery shopper jobs to people around the country in a scam that cost thousands of victims at total of $6 million.

Some experts on Work from Home careers who operate a virtual job training for the military, maintain a “Scam-o-Meter” to track scammers that seek to part honest job seekers with cash or personal information. As of July, the meter estimated that there were at least 60 scam advertisements online for every legitimate home based opportunity.

In difficult times, punters let down their guard due to a sense of desperation. Roy Davidson of Elite Business Systems warned ”Scammers have been able to continue because it seems that the public are vulnerable and keep coming back for more. “It’s really tough, even for the more savvy job seekers. I’ve spoken to people who blog about this topic extensively and they’ve come forward and admitted, ‘I’ve been scammed.’”

If you’re looking for part or full time work you can do from home, here are some red lights that the experts say could signal a job advertisement isn’t what is claimed.

Red Light One. Phrases such as “work from home”.  The home based market is changing, with more companies and government agencies giving employees flexibility to choose where and when to work. Companies with real positions are adapting their language to use words such as “telecommute” or “remote working” to describe available positions to separate themselves from online scammers.

Red Light Two. No company name. Legitimate blind ads aren’t unusual, especially if they’re placed by a recruitment agency operating on a legitimate company’s behalf. But they could also signal a scam. If you are unsure, research the recruitment agency to make sure they’re for genuine.

Red Light Three. No company website or email address. At a time when even the smallest legitimate company has a website or other online presence, be careful of job listings that don’t include a web address. Similarly, take care when replying to an email address that doesn’t include a company’s domain name (such as Hotmail for Gmail). It could be a scammer posing as the company.

Red Light Four. Promises of quick cash. If you’re promised you’ll make easy money for easy work, that’s a red light.

If you find a job that sounds promising, try verifying it yourself to see if it’s legitimate. Contact the company directly. Perform a Google search on the company’s name and the word “scam” to see what comes up. However, take search results with a pinch of salt. You may find some unflattering comments, but that doesn’t mean they’re scammers. It just helps give a bigger picture of a company. And if there’s nothing, that’s an even better sign.”

Shawn & Cemon Lewis
